About the Lightbulb Moments Tutoring
About the Lightbulb Moments TutoringThe Lightbulb Moments Tutoring Course is a unique project-based approach to helping students learn academic skills. Students use what they have learned in a real life setting to create a light bulb moment using objects from their own homes and the world around them. The 'Lightbulb Moments' is captured on video and can be used as an independent learning resource by the students and a collaborative activity by teachers. The aim of the Internet is to help us expand our capabilities to help in the global village, and that can be achieved by working in a virtual online world. Our world is becoming more populated with all kinds of different people from all over the world and it is a good idea to use the tools of the digital age to help make people more globally aware. This way, we get to experience the social and cultural differences and we also learn from them. One of the key elements of the Lightbulb Moments Tutoring was learning how to conduct a communi ty event in a virtual environment. In our modern day, there are so many people from so many different places. We all work together and we all live in the same place, but we don't see each other every day and we don't see everyone's families either. We need to learn how to enjoy the things we do together and learn to see these things through each other's eyes.Learning how to use technology in a global level is a challenge. We can use it to help boost social awareness and create awareness for global issues, but we also have to use it to help educate ourselves and to foster trust in others. We can share our knowledge in a more interactive way by doing projects and this has the dual advantage of increasing students' knowledge in real time and getting them into a more active learning environment.Students come into the Lightbulb Moments Tutoring ready to go with a little bit of practice, but most of them didn't have any idea about the project or even what a light bulb moment was. They had to use their imagination to take a light bulb out of their home and place it in a box and then they had to find a person they knew who lived somewhere in the world and they had to make contact with them. Once they had those two things, they had to put the light bulb in the box and then take it back to the teacher and explain how it worked.During the lesson, they are instructed about the project, which includes using the internet to find things from your home and to locate a person that lives in another country, that can help you. The lesson guides also give some examples of what the student has to do and to encourage a sense of urgency, they give the students a short time limit to complete the project. This ensures that they are really going to take action and that they know what they are doing. Now we can look at how this works in a classroom. How do teachers get students to do something together? What do the students think? How do we use the internet to help us learn better? An onl ine class is a lot like a classroom where the teacher can guide the students through what is happening, but the important thing is that the student feels a sense of urgency. There is no doubt that the internet has a lot to offer for students, but it takes a bit of imagination to use it to help the learners to expand their capabilities. And we all know that one can only learn through interaction, and that is the way that students learn best.

4 Things College Students Can do to be Successful Entrepreneurs
4 Things College Students Can do to be Successful Entrepreneurs Tips From a Costa Mesa College Tutor: 4 Things College Students Can do to be Successful Entrepreneurs As high school seniors are pondering which college or university they would like to attend next year, they should be thinking ahead about the big picture and how they want their college education to help them succeed in the career field of their choice. Emerging graduates are choosing to be entrepreneurs; either theyre starting their own business from scratch or using entrepreneurial skills as part of their contribution to a larger corporation. We are living in a time of innovation, and its important for young entrepreneurs to be efficient and practical as well as creative throughout their careers. Many college students dont even begin to think about their careers until they reach their second semester of senior year. However, its important for underclassmen to start thinking about how they can become a successful entrepreneur now rather than later our private Costa Mesa college tutors are here to help you succeed. 1. Participate in the campus community When students join an organization or even start one of their own, they begin to understand the complexities of building something from the ground up. They have to get people to help them fulfill their vision, refine a mission statement, and compromise with others. Students who spread themselves too thin will find they accomplish almost nothing at all. Participating in a campus organization on a regular basis is an excellent way for students to understand the highs and lows of being an entrepreneur. College is, after all, a place for students to learn what works and what doesnt so they can refine their skills and apply them appropriately once theyre in the working world. 2. Learn the traditional way Students can also gain leadership skills by simply taking a class. They dont have to be majoring in business or entrepreneur skills to take a course on the subject. In fact, a student in any field benefits from what theyll learn in a course on entrepreneurship. Students who arent exactly sure how to get started on their own will find the structure of a traditional learning environment to be comforting and familiar with what theyve been used to the last several years. They will have access to an experienced educator as well as classmates who have similar interests. This is a great place to start for any college student (READ: Irvine Tutoring Tips: 4 Finals Week Pitfalls to Avoid). 3. Student politics Anyone who has served in student government will know that people skills are essential. To be an entrepreneur, learning how to get along with different personality types is just the beginning. Young entrepreneurs need to rally investors to their product or service and advertise their product on what will likely be a very low budget. Students can learn these things ahead of time by participating in any form of student politics while on campus. Many of the people skills students need in the future will be learned, likely through trial and error, in a safe and supportive environment. 4. Start a side business Many new entrepreneurs start out by testing their skills on a small side business. Whether theyre providing a physical product or an intangible service, students learn a ton by running their own small business. They might be improving upon something that already exists or inventing something out of thin air, either way, students will gain valuable skills they can use after graduation. The business might be related to something that specifically benefits college students, it could be something that is supported by the college through an official organization, or it might be something separate from the studentâs academic life. College finals will be starting in a few weeks. Make sure youre prepared to end the year on a high note with the help of our Costa Mesa college tutoring. Call TutorNerds today for more information. Public Speaking and the Value of Singing Lessons
Public Speaking and the Value of Singing Lessons Suzy S. Most students taking singing lessons have aspirations of getting up on stage, whether that be for a recital, audition, or maybe just to survive karaoke night. However, voice lessons can be especially valuable for public speakers, as well. Just as the vocalist practices breath control, inflections and dynamics, public speakers can also benefit from vocal exercises. Singing or voice lessons can also help a ton with your stage presence and confidence! You may not think about warming up before speaking in front of groups, but it can make a huge difference in your delivery, clarity, volume and vocal strength, if you know just what to focus on. Breathing exercises in particular are a great thing to practice, as they can help with your vocal control (as well as ease stress!). Here are some steps to follow to check your breathing: Get into a comfortable position, whether this is standing, sitting or lying down. Place of your hands on your chest, and the other on your abdomen. As you take a deep breath, focus on where your hands are: the hand on your abdomen should rise higher than the one on your chest, which occurs when your diaphragm pulls airs into your lungs. Exhale through your mouth, and then inhale again through your nose, this time holding it for as long as you are able to comfortably. Exhale again slowly through your mouth. Contract your abdominal muscles one final time to expel any remaining air. Repeat this exercise a few more times, focusing on each inhale and exhale. As you get comfortable with the exercise, you can practice without the aid of your hands. Once you get used to this style of natural breathing, youll have better breath and voice control, which helps with all aspects of speaking and singing. Looking for speaking voice lessons near you? What is it Like to Attend University of Minnesota
What is it Like to Attend University of Minnesota The tutors behind Varsity Tutors are not just here to teach theyre sharing their college experiences as well. David is currently a junior at the University of Minnesota studying Biochemistry and Finance. He is a Minneapolis tutor specializing in Chemistry tutoring, Biology tutoring, ACT prep tutoring, and several other subjects. See what he had to say about his school: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. How urban or safe is the campus? Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? David: The University of Minnesota campus is divided into three parts: the East Bank and West Bank in Minneapolis, and the St. Paul campus, a few miles east. All three sections are relatively urban in nature. Campus is relatively safe, but spread out. Walking, busing, or biking between classes is common; driving a car is possible, but finding cheap or free parking can be frustrating. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? David: It really depends on the class. I have had lectures with 20 students, where every student has face time with the professor, and I have had lecture halls of 500, where no one knows the professor very well. Teaching assistants and academic advisers are usually available for larger classroom settings. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? David: We have lots of dorms on campusBailey Hall in St. Paul, Middlebrook Hall on the West Bank, and several more on the East Bank. Most residence halls have integrated dining centers; the ones that do not are near those that do. Most dorms are very social, with lounge-like areas for socializing and periodic group activities. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? David: The University of Minnesota has a broad range of well-represented majors and programs. Chemistry, business, law, and mathematics are especially strong. I am a biochemistry/finance double major, and though my position is unique, I am well supported by my academic advisers/counselors. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? David: I found meeting people at Middlebrook Hall on West Bank to be very easy. I ended up living with friends I made after I moved out, and the atmosphere is friendly and light. Greek life is its own little subculture; those who participate usually stick within Greek circles, and I have never been involved in it. Fraternities and sororities occasionally hold campus events, but for the most part, they stick to themselves. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? David: The career center and job fairs make finding potential employers a breeze. Lots of reputable companies hire students directly after graduation, and there are additional job offers and internship opportunities available on the University of Minnesotas website. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? David: It really depends on the time you go. There are three main libraries: Wilson Library on West Bank, and Walter Library and the biomedical libraries on East Bank. During finals week, good luck finding an open table to study at. But most of the time, there is plenty of room to use. Wilson Library is probably the biggest and least crowded of the three. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between? To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? David: The downtown and uptown neighborhoods near campus make adventures to local restaurants and other establishments common. Many students spend time in Dinkytown, where there is food and entertainment in abundance. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? David: The student body is massive, all in all near 50,000. Class sizes really depend on the field of study and division of class. For example, an introductory calculus class may be a massive lecture, whereas a philosophy course I took last year had about 20 students. Generally, my class sizes average under 100which keeps me engaged enough to do well. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. David: I enjoyed Organic Chemistry laboratoryit was hands-on, very challenging, and I had an excellent teaching assistant named David. In the beginning, the experiments were very simple, but as the semester continued on, the complexity increased. By the end, we were performing highly specialized copolymer synthesis reactions, and the sense of achievement was great. Check out Davids tutoring profile. Workplace Conflict Resolution using Mediation - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / Workplace Conflict Resolution using Mediation - Introvert Whisperer Workplace Conflict Resolution using Mediation Conflicts can arise from a lot of factors. The usual ways to resolve conflict cannot be done by the untrained individual. This part is where the professionals come in to help save the relationship. Workplace conflicts cannot be prevented. This one is primarily because of conflicting theories that come up at every point, different points of view that come up during meetings, and different beliefs in handling workplace issues. As a manager or as an employee, If you are looking at the best ways to do workplace conflict resolution, you should keep the information shared here in mind. The Things to Prevent in Case of Workplace Conflict For managers and supervisors, there are a few things that they cannot do during a time of conflict and they are listed below: First, you should not avoid the conflict. A common mistake that individual managers do is avoid the conflict as if it is not an issue. As a leader, you need to face the problem head-on because a conflict that you try to put under the bridge would just increase your level of stress and disagreements between employees. Whenever you allow a disagreement to go unresolved, you feed your employees with the belief that you they should survive despite feeling like they are walking on eggshells all the time. This fact would not lead to a good working environment, not for you nor for your employees. Second, you should not meet with the people in conflict separately. If you allow everyone to meet with you personally, you take the risk of polarizing their positions. It makes no possible sense for you to convince yourself of each side, you need to nip the problem at the root cause and hear both sides at the same time as it prevents partiality as well. You should remove the belief that the only people affected by the conflict are the participants. Everyone in the office would have to survive everyday knowing that a fight may erupt at any time. It is not going to be good for you nor for your employees to make them feel like this. By preventing the problem, you make it even bigger because you are pushing people to pick sides. The Right Way to Resolve the Conflicts There is a right way to resolve any kind of work conflict. The following are the steps that you can take in case of a conflict: Recognize that a problem exists The first thing that you should do is to recognize that a problem exists in your workplace or organization. Keep in mind that you should first accept the problem for you to be able to resolve it. Make sure that you do research first Keep in mind that before meeting with the people in conflict you should research and ask around. Ask people who are affected by the problem first and third-party individuals who may know anything about the issue. Clearing the problem is a good step to take as it allows you to make sure that you know all the facts before you meet the individuals Meet with the antagonists together You should meet them together. Let them summarize their points in front of the other while preventing the other from commenting or interrupting the other party. It should be a short discussion of the issues with all parties listening. During the meeting, make sure that the following are followed: The parties should not interrupt the other when the other is still talking. There should be no attack from either one of the parties. Both parties should be calm and collected. At the end of the meeting, you should ask each participant to discuss their expectations with the problem. Ask them to make a report that encompasses the following: The resolution that they expect to have; The compromise that they are willing to follow; and Their commitment that such problems would no longer be an issue in the future. By the time that the conflict has been resolved, you should get both parties to make a commitment on the changes that they will do to address the problem. What If the Problem Is Not Fixed? If the problem persists despite your conflict resolution methods, you should get a workplace mediator to help you. You may even decide to get one during your initial meeting with the parties so that you would have that foundation and assistance that you need to resolve the conflict. Conflicts Should Be Addressed As Soon As Possible Conflicts that go on for too long end up getting bigger and even more complicated. Stories give birth to more stories and misunderstandings lead to more misunderstandings. The right way to resolve conflicts is to address the problem as soon as you possibly can and that is close to its occurrence.
